Rockville is a city located in Montgomery County, Maryland, of which it is the county seat. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 47,388. Rockville has a sister city arrangement with Pinneberg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Rockville is approximately in the center of Montgomery County. Its location is 39°5' North, 77°9' West.

Rockville is located at 39°5'1" North, 77°8'54" West (39.083708, -77.148226).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 34.8 km² (13.4 mi²). 34.8 km² (13.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Rockville history

When the county was founded, the area now known as Rockville was called Montgomery Courthouse, and from the beginning the county seat was located here. In 1784, William Prather Williams, a local landowner, hired a surveyor to lay out much of the town. In his honor, the name was changed to Williamsburgh. By 1803, when the area was officially entered into the county land records, however, the name used was "Rockville," believed to be derived from Rock Creek.

Rockville was incorporated in 1860.

In 1873, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad arrived, making Rockville easily accessible from Washington, D. C. This led to a period of faster growth.
