Quilombos are hinterland settlements originally created by runaway slaves in Brazil. Some were quite near Portuguese settlements, and quite active both in defending against capitães do mato commissioned to recapture slaves and in facilitating the escape of even more slaves, and thus were actively fought by first the Portuguese, then the Brazilian state and slaveowners.

While a tiny minority, quilombos also included marginalised Portuguese and other non-black, non-slave Brazilians.

The most famous of the quilombos was Palmares. It endured a long war against the Portuguese, and when defeated it was leaded by legendary Zumbi, who killed himself in the general defeat.

Quilombos which were more retired from Portuguese settlements and, later, Brazilian cities, were effectively tolerated and still exist, to the point of having their own African-Portuguese creoles speaken.

In Spanish America, the equivalent settlements were called palenques.

In American Spanish, quilombo means "mess".
